Day 26 · January 26
A devotional for today
Today’s readings
- Old Testament: EXODUS 2:11-3:22
- New Testament: MATTHEW 17:10-27
- Psalm: PSALM 22:1-18
- Proverb: PROVERBS 5:7-14
Old Testament
Moses attempts deliverance in his own strength, flees to Midian, and then meets God at the burning bush. The Lord reveals his holy name, remembers his covenant, and sends Moses as his chosen instrument.
New Testament
Jesus explains Elijah’s role, heals a demon-oppressed boy, foretells his death, and humbly provides the temple tax. Power and humility dwell together in him.
Psalm
Psalm 22 begins with anguish so deep it feels like abandonment. Yet even in distress the psalmist remembers God’s past faithfulness and keeps praying.
Proverb
Wisdom warns against joining those headed toward ruin. Sin often invites us into company and patterns that promise belonging while delivering shame.
Discover
The “I Am” who speaks from the bush points forward to Jesus, who bears the divine identity and brings the ultimate deliverance. Psalm 22 also prepares us to see him as the suffering Savior.
Reflect
God’s call often comes after years of obscurity and broken self-reliance. He is holy, personal, covenant-faithful, and fully aware of his people’s suffering.
Fellowship
What changed in Moses between his first attempt and God’s call at the bush?
Why are both Jesus’ power and humility important in Matthew 17?
How does Psalm 22 help believers pray in suffering?
What harmful companionship or pattern do you need to avoid?
Prayer
I Am, holy and merciful, call me out of self-reliance into humble obedience. Help me trust your presence when suffering feels heavy.
Live
Take off your “sandals” today in a reverent sense - slow down, worship, and listen before rushing to act.
